In patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, serum levels of ?-fetoprotein are influenced by sex, characteristics of chronic liver disease, and features of tumor aggressiveness. These findings confirm the limits of using ?-fetoprotein as a clinical aid in patients with known or suspected hepatocellular carcinoma.
